Check an ash catcher at two connections: where it meets the water pipe, and where it accepts the bowl or slide. Then confirm the selected joint angle, physical clearance and included pieces. A listing that says “14mm” does not, by itself, answer all of those questions.
How do you read the two connections?
Write down the size and male or female fit of your pipe’s receiving joint. Separately, identify the bowl or slide that will connect to the catcher. Keep those two checks distinct when reading a product listing: the pipe-facing connection is not automatically the same connection as the bowl-facing one.
The examples below illustrate how to read maker specifications. They are not a promise that either accessory fits your particular pipe.
GRAV example: a named pipe fit and included parts
The GRAV 14mm Standard 90° Ash Catcher lists a 14mm male pipe-facing joint. GRAV describes its 90° arm for a 14mm female joint on a straight-based water pipe.
For this exact model, GRAV also lists a 14mm Funnel Bowl and 14mm Fission Downstem among the included pieces. That package information matters if you are comparing a complete accessory with a listing that supplies fewer parts. Do not assume another catcher includes the same components.
Pulsar example: bowl fit is a separate specification
Pulsar’s Grateful Dead Steal Your Face Ash Catcher is specified for 14mm male slides and 14mm female pipes. Read that as two requirements: your slide must match the catcher’s inlet, and the catcher must match your pipe.
The same maker listing offers separate 45° and 90° versions. Matching the connection size does not choose the angle for you. Check the actual pipe joint and selected version; do not choose solely because the body is called a beaker or straight tube.
Does every ash catcher have a percolator?
No. Pulsar specifies no percolator on its Basics Ash Catcher and a showerhead water-percolation chamber on its “No Ash” model. Check the exact maker specification rather than assuming that every ash catcher adds a water percolator. Connection size, angle and clearance still need separate checks.
What should you confirm before ordering?
- Pipe and bowl: Record both mating connections, including size and male or female fit.
- Selected angle: Check the exact option rather than relying on a group photo.
- Room and support: Compare the accessory’s dimensions with the space around the pipe, base and bowl. A joint match alone does not establish clearance or balance.
- Package: Read the included-items list. If a required fit or package detail is missing, resolve it before buying.
