To choose a replacement bong bowl or slide, match the connection size and choose the joint type that fits your piece: a male bowl inserts into a female opening, while a female bowl fits over a male connection. Then confirm the exact part's compatibility before ordering. The size of the cup alone does not tell you whether it will fit.

Joint size is not bowl capacity

A label such as 14 mm describes the joint connection, not how much the bowl holds. Manufacturers can list those specifications separately: the GRAV 14mm Basin Bowl, for example, has separate joint-size and capacity details. Do not assume that two bowls with the same joint label have the same cup size.

What do 10, 14 and 18 mm mean?

These are common advertised glass-joint sizes. You may also encounter 14.5 mm instead of 14 mm, or 18.8 mm described as 18 or 19 mm. Thick Ass Glass explains these naming conventions. They are useful labels, not a guarantee that every similarly named accessory is interchangeable. Check the maker's specification for your piece and the replacement part.

Male or female: check the connection that receives the bowl

Look at the joint where the replacement will actually seat. A female joint is the receiving opening; a male joint is the projecting connection that inserts into it. GRAV's accessory-fit guide explains this pairing. If your bowl sits in a removable downstem, use that downstem's bowl connection as your reference, not a different opening elsewhere on the piece.

Quick connection check

  • Female opening: choose a male bowl with the specified connection size.
  • Male connection: choose a female bowl with the specified connection size.
  • Unclear or proprietary connection: confirm the correct part with the maker; do not choose from appearance alone.

This checklist is a selection aid, not a fit guarantee. A matching nominal label does not replace an exact compatibility check.

A quick replacement-bowl checklist

  1. Identify the piece. Find its brand and model, then the manufacturer's listed bowl or slide connection.
  2. Identify the interface. Check whether the bowl connects directly to the piece or to a separate downstem.
  3. Compare both details. Match the advertised connection size and the required male or female joint.
  4. Review the exact replacement. Read its specifications and compatible-model notes. Consider cup shape, handle placement and clearance separately from joint size.
  5. Resolve uncertainty first. Ask the maker or contact the shop with the model and part details before buying. A photo alone is not confirmed compatibility.

Common replacement questions

Can I buy a bowl just because it looks like my old one?

Use appearance to narrow the search, not to finish it. Confirm the connection details and model compatibility in the listing.

Do I need a bowl, a downstem or another accessory?

Identify the part you are replacing before comparing sizes. A bowl's cup, its connecting joint and a separate downstem are different parts of the buying decision.
